The Landscape Within

The theme for April at Art Journal Journey is ‘The Landscape within.’  I have been a bit pushed for time and decided to flip through and see if any of my unfinished pieces I could use for this theme. Gulp, I have so many pieces that are unfinished or unresolved!  I finally found one I thought I could work with.  It was a page that I had abandoned as I felt that the eyes were too small and didn’t match up (Yes you have seen this girl before; I redid her in autumn colours a while back).  I have real problems sometimes to get the eyes to match, hehe – cross eyed beauties!  Also she looked as if her cheek was swollen!

So I got to and used acrylics, gouache and watercolour pencils and painted, splattered and stamped to my heart’s content.  I decided she was rather like a mermaid and decided to bring her in with two stencils.  One of favourite ways of creating stencils is to cut out with an art scalpel, elements that take my fancy in glossy magazines.  I find that they can take being messed around with paint a few times.  The palm tree I cut out from a travel brochure and the leaves thing was from an ad.

I hope I created enough texture and layering to show that the landscape within me is quite busy and fluid!

Paint Party Friday

This week I have been concentrating on getting my illustration web site ready for uploading, I hope to have it done by next week, but knowing me it will probably be the week after.  The creative work is done, but I have to sort the codes and get the code verified etc. etc. Boring, so I tend to find other things to do!  But, I have taken myself in hand, as hopefully it will become my bread and butter.

The upshot is that I have only spent a little bit of time painting, and my portrait is far from finished.  To keep my spirits up (painting mode that is) I have done a couple of watercolours.  The one above is the window sill next to my computer desk.  I love the blue bottle the colours fascinate me when the sun catches it.
The gouache below is of Lucy my big ‘Fat Mama’ cat!  She is very much an indoor cat, huge and lazy.  However, if there is a smell of a mouse she is like a young gazelle and can move at the speed of light!  Her favourite position is on a window sill surveying the world.

The next is a gouache I did during 29 Faces; I just love that poem by Coleridge and often use it to encourage me to think anything is possible.  What would you do if you had that dream and woke up with a flower clenched in your hand…..?

Happy Paint Party Friday everyone.

A Journal Week

This week has been busy for me and I haven’t had much time for painting my large portrait of my friend.  Hopefully, I will get time this holiday weekend and I will be able to finish it next week for PPF.  However, I have been able to do some journal pieces this week.

I used gouache for this page.  I love it as it has more body than pure watercolour.  I read that quote in a book of quotes about ‘tranquility’ I am reading and thought it wonderful and suited my rather quizzical girl!

One of the reasons I have been busy is that I did a guest post for Julie Balzer’s  Art Journal Every Day for this weekend.  Click here to view.  She wanted me to write about my experience doing the 29 FACES CHALLENGE.

Earlier in the week I managed to get out and do these two water colours in my watercolour journal.  I love trees and there was a time when they appeared in nearly every painting I did.  I have realized that I have not painted any for a long time.  I have had a painting in my head for a long time and I think it is time to let it out.  So,I think it will be the next painting I do after I finish my friend’s portrait.

The last bit of art for today is a journal page I have been working on for a while.  I think I need to do something about the text.  The text doesn’t show up very well when scanned.  Perhaps if I put a dark lined around the edges?  The text should read “Home is where my heart is.”  So that is my week.

Have a great Easter Holiday every one!
