Lots of Colour

Didn’t get much art done this week, I have developed tendonitis in my left hand through using it a lot!  Can’t win!  One good upshot is that I have somebody in to do the housework, hehehe.  Better not get used to it, as it is only for 6 weeks.  Meanwhile the right arm is healing well enough and I am able to use it for light tasks, whatever that may be!

However I did some work in my journal and finished the page I stared last week.  It turned out completely different from what I planned…..

When I was in hospital, I had a young nurse who had glorious red hair, which she called carrot!  Well yesterday while I was waiting at the bus stop after physio, she was coming off duty and came up to me and offered me a ride. On the way home I commented that I loved her pink and lilac outfit.  She laughed and told me how her mother would never let her wear pink, even though it was her favourite colour.  Her Mum said it clashed with her carrot hair.  So now she wore pink whenever she could.

After thanking her for the lift and telling her in a stern voice never to call her hair carrot, as it was insulting to such a glorious colour.  I swear I saw tears in her eyes as she drove away.  I stewed for a bit at the damage thoughtless remarks can make, and this page was finished.

Every day this week, I have done one page of watercolour shapes for my journaling.  While I like to use magazines, I would also like to make borders and shapes out of my own art.  My journal that I am using at present soaks up paint like it is going out of fashion!  The paper is lovely and thick, so takes a lot of beating, but I can't get the watercolour effects that I love.   So this is a solution, and very therapeutic, as it gives me the feeling I am creating. Here are some samples.

  4. those watercolour circles are glorious and the journal pages are fab... I hope that she takes on board what you said... but I am totally obsessing on pretending to get tendonitis so I can get a cleaner for a time... no clue how I would get around the no painting thing, but it might be worth thinking about.... hope you get well enough to paint soon... though not well enough to not need the cleaner!!!

  5. Wow I love red hair too...now people call them gingers...which to me is just as bad singling them out.So glad you spoke up for her and her favorite color. Mothers can be so damaging...imagine all these years she felt bad.... poor thing... Glad she met you!!

Love the tribute to that situation...well said...loads of love on that page!! Good job!! Hope you feel better soon...the cleaner sounds sooo good to me... Sending love and prayers for healing!!

  6. Wonderful journal page, Sharon! And I can imagine that your nurse was rather moved than upset at your remark. I love red hair so much and remember one beauty i adored when I was in my teens. She lived in our town, but I haven't seen her for many years. :-)
I could use someone to help cleaning, as busy I am with my study still...
    Wish you well!

  9. Great post, Sharon. I love the story. My granddaughter has red hair. Many of the faces I paint are surrounded by red hair. I think your colors in today's post are just fabulous and all the colors live happily together. Thanks for visiting my blog.

  20. Isn't it funny that a mum could instil self-consciousness in her own child by such a throw away remark. But I love that she rebelled in adulthood by wearing pink in defiance!! Red hair is glorious and I love that you did a journal page on it! Sorry to hear about your tendinitis but am glad that your shoulder is getting better and hopefully you'll be back to painting large scale in no time.
