People Watching

I have always watched people, their emotions, attitudes and body language.

These days I take my A5 size sketchbook with me wherever I go and try to sketch at least two people per outing. Often it is only an outline and if so I finish it at home.  The first one was an outline, as I didn't want to make it obvious I was drawing her.  I find it works as if I tried to sketch the full portrait I get bogged down in trying to get an likeness and often it ends up a mess.  The one on the opposite page only took about 5 minutes.

The other bit of sketching I do is when watching TV.  I sit on the sofa with my coloured pencils and doodle draw.  This is how I get my quirky faces, as I am not looking at the drawing so am not fussed about detail.

Are you a people watcher?

  1. I'm a people watcher myself but I rarely sketch people....hoping to change that. Nice sketches! :)

  2. I've never really tried to sketch people quickly while I was out and about. That sounds like it could be really fun. I love your "lost in thought" sketch. You were able to get so much emotion. Great job!

  6. What fun. No I've never done this as I think people would spot me staring at them as I struggled to slowly draw them. Good idea to do it from the TV pictures.
I like the right hand one on the first photo, she looks sweet and interesting, and I can imagine her in colour.

  7. These are fabulous! I used to sketch people during my daughter's swim meets, because we always had down time. I thoroughly enjoyed it, but haven't done it in a while. You may have just prompted me to do it again. Blessings!

  8. The most inspiring thing is to draw the human faces and postures. You have reminded me to take up the pen again, thankU!

  9. Your TV sketching idea sounds great because the outcome looks great too! I love all your people. They all have such a special character and your colors are always matching with the faces perfectly!
